Teenage girl in school uniformThe Children's Society has launched a petition to demand government action on unaffordable school uniforms in the upcoming Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, currently with the House of Lords for reporting and amending.

Secondary schools require an average of six branded items as part of their uniform, and primary schools require an average of five.

The costs can be simply unaffordable for families who are already struggling to afford the basics. And the consequences for young people who can't afford the correct items are worrying, with 44% of children surveyed having experienced detention, isolation or even exclusion.

The Children's Society petition is calling on the government to put a statutory limit on three branded school uniform items, to reduce the cost for families.

More than 2,100 people have already signed the petition - help The Children's Society reach their goal of 10,000 and add your name today.
